I'm writing this from Hong Kong, to record my building of a Somes Sound 12 ½ in my backyard. The Somes Sound is designed by John Brooks of Brooks Boats Designs.
This is a lapstrake version of the Herreshoff Haven 12 ½, of 1902. Nate Herreshoff was a storied designer of yachts, who produced a series of undefeated America's Cup yachts between 1893 and 1920. See here.
This blog is not meant to be a reference for others building a Somes Sound, as is, for example Dave's site or the site of the designer John Brooks.
Both of these are terrific sites and very useful to me, another would-be builder.
But this site is not meant for that: it's more for my own record and for my Mum and family and maybe some mates, to check out from time to time if they wish to.
If you've come across this site and are building a Somes Sound, by all means I'd love to share experiences with you.

LATER: (11th Jan '13): turns out that some others have looked at the site, including other builders of the SS 12 ½, so I'll include a bit more on my experiences with the build, and in due course, lessons learnt....
LATER (9th Feb '13): Arlene, who appears in various photos on the blog, is our live-in Helper here in Hong Kong. She's been my indefatigable and indispensable helper on the build as well. And she's become keen on boatbuilding and carpentry in general. She makes all sorts of bits and pieces out of left-over timber, from planter boxes to tool stands. Just checked your blog Peter. The method you used to melt and pour your lead was very interesting. Just goes to show there is more than one way to skin a cat. I am working on fitting out and building a mast jig to transport the mast horizontally on the trailer. Hope to add a new post shortly.
